Über Werner Holtfort ist jüngst eine Biographie erschienen. Ältere HU-Mitglieder werden sich an ihn erinnern. Neben seinen vielfältigen sonstigen Aktivitäten war der Rechtsanwalt, der SPD-Landtagsabgeordnete, der Mitbegründer des Republikanischen Anwaltsvereins und der Knigge-Gesellschaft Werner Holtfort (1920 bis 1992) langjähriges HU-Mitglied und von 1977 bis 1985 auch im Vorstand der HU tätig. Er war einer, der gegen den Strom schwamm, bis zu seinem letzten Brief, den er am 9. April 1992, also wenige Tage vor seinem Tod, an den Bundesvorstand der HU geschrieben hat (Mitteilungen Nr. 138, Juni 1992, S. 37). Damals ging es um die Verleihung des Fritz-Bauer-Preises an Hans-Joachim Gauck und die Rücknahme dieser Preisverleihung durch den HU-Vorstand, einem krisenhaften Vorgang, der bei der HU viele Blessuren und Verluste verursacht hat.<\/p>\n
Holtfort, aus konservativem hannöverschem Milieu stammend, überzeugter Offizier im zweiten Weltkrieg, war danach zunächst wirtschaftsrechtlich orientierter Rechtsanwalt und Verbandsfunktionär in der Notarkammer und der Rechtsanwaltskammer. Erst spät, etwa um 1970, wurde aus dem bloßen Juristen ein Politiker, ein Kämpfer für Bürgerrechte, Freiheit, soziale Gerechtigkeit, ein bürgerlicher Linker und Liberaler, der keinem Konflikt aus dem Weg ging, dabei aber nie jemanden verletzte, der Freundschaften über Parteigrenzen pflegte, dem die Ausbildung der Juristen am Herzen lag, der mit seinem Freund Jürgen Seifert in Mutlangen gegen die Lagerung von Atomsprengköpfen demonstrierte, sich in Berufsverbotsverfahren engagierte und die Anti-Terror-Gesetze der RAF-Zeit bekämpfte. In Hannover setzte er, der Intellektuelle mit konservativem Habitus, sich 1981 in der Wahlbezirkskonferenz der SPD in der linken Arbeiterhochburg Linden als Landtagskandidat gegen den damaligen Oberbürgermeister von Hannover, Herbert Schmalstieg, durch; zweimal, 1982 und 1986 gewann er den Landtags-Wahlkreis mit absoluter Stimmenmehrheit gegen Birgit Breuel, nachmalige Treuhand-Präsidentin. Er trat dann 1990 freiwillig ab; den heimlichen Wunsch, Justizminister zu werden, konnte er sich nicht mehr erfüllen.<\/p>\n
Holtfort hatte die nicht sehr verbreitete Gabe, klare Gedankengänge in eine klare Sprache umzusetzen, die in seinen noch heute lesenswerten Aufsätzen in den vorgängen<\/i> von 1977 bis 1984 zum Vorschein kommt.<\/p>\n
Mit vielen Details zum Leben, zur Persönlichkeit und zum Wirken Holtforts wartet Sylvia Remé in ihrem Buch auf, einer Dissertation im Fach Geschichte. Die Autorin, die in der Verwaltung des niedersächsischen Landtags tätig ist, hat Holtfort erst in seinen letzten Jahren persönlich kennen gelernt, das ist gelegentlich spürbar. Ihre Eindrücke über ihn hat sie vor allem aus rd. 50 Interviews mit Freunden, Weggefährten, Kollegen, aber auch politischen Kontrahenten Holtforts gewonnen. Zudem hatte sie Gelegenheit, seinen Nachlass in der Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Bibliothek in Hannover auszuwerten. Ein lesenswertes Buch über eine bemerkenswerte Persönlichkeit.<\/p>\n
