Die Humanistische Union verleiht ihren diesjährigen Fritz-Bauer-Preis an den früheren Richter am Oberlandesgericht Braunschweig, Dr. Helmut Kramer. Mit der Entscheidung würdigt die Bürgerrechtsorganisation Kramers Initiativen zur Aufarbeitung der Justizgeschichte des Nationalsozialismus, sein Engagement für Gedenkstätten und die rechtshistorische Ausbildung junger Juristen, seinen Einsatz gegen das Rechtsberatungsgesetz und nicht zuletzt die friedenspolitischen Bemühungen des Preisträgers.
Helmut Kramer hat sich wie kein zweiter der Aufgabe verschrieben, die Hinterlassenschaften des Nationalsozialismus aufzuarbeiten: Sein Name steht gleichermaßen für die Rehabilitierung der Opfer, für die lokalhistorische Dokumentation der Verbrechen, für die Aufdeckung personeller Kontinuitäten in der bundesdeutschen Justiz, die Aufhebung des NS-Unrechts und die rechtshistorische Bildungsarbeit. <\/p>\n

Die Preisverleihung findet an einem geschichtsträchtigen Ort statt: Im so genannten EL-DE-Haus war von 1935 bis zum Kriegsende 1945 die Kölner Zentrale der Geheimen Staatspolizei (Gestapo) untergebracht. In den Zellen und Verwaltungsräumen erinnert heute ein Ausstellungs- und Dokumentationszentrum an einzelne Schicksale der Insassen und klärt über die Funktionsweise des NS-Systems auf.<\/p>\n

Der Preis<\/h5>\n

Der Fritz-Bauer-Preis ist die höchste Auszeichnung der Humanistischen Union. Der ideelle Preis wird im Gedenken an Dr. Fritz Bauer, den 1968 verstorbenen hessischen Generalstaatsanwalt und Mitbegründer der Humanistischen Union verliehen. Er war es, der die Verfolgung nationalsozialistischer Verbrechen ermöglichte und gegen zahlreiche Widerstände in der jungen Bundesrepublik durchsetzte. Der nach ihm benannte Preis wurde von der Humanistischen Union im Juli 1968, zwei Wochen nach dem Tod Fritz Bauers gestiftet.
