BigBrotherAwards haben hierzulande früh auf bedenkliche Entwicklungen hingewiesen und auch bereits einiges bewirkt: Sie machten die Datenschutzprobleme bei Kundenkarten bekannt(Erstellung von Konsumprofilen über Payback-Systeme) und zeigten die Risiken von RFID-Schnüffelchips auf. Lange vor den Überwachungsskandalen bei Lidl, Telekom, Bahn und Co. wurden BigBrotherAwards an diese Konzerne verliehen – für die um sich greifende Kontrolle und Überwachung von Mitarbeitern und Kunden. Klar, dass auch der ehemalige Bundesinnenminister Otto Schily für seine „Otto-Kataloge“ (ausufernde und freiheitsbeschränkende Antiterrorgesetze), andere Bundesminister sowie die Generalbundesanwältin Monika Harms (Terrorfahndung, Geruchsproben) für die Einschränkung der Bürgerrechte und des Datenschutzes mit diesem Negativpreis bedacht wurden; ebenso wie die Innenministerkonferenz („Antiterrordatei“), diverse Landesinnenminister (u.a. Verschärfung von Polizeigesetzen, präventive Telekommunikationsüberwachung; Videoüberwachung im öffentlichen Raum), das BKA (präventive „Gewalttäterdateien“), das Ausländerzentralregister, die GEZ und der EU-Ministerrat (EU-Terrorliste). Man darf gespannt sein, welchen Personen und Institutionen 2009 die zweifelhafte „Ehre“ zuteil wird…<\/p>\n
Seit dem Jahr 2000 werden die BigBrotherAwards in Deutschland an Firmen, Organisationen und Personen verliehen, die in besonderer Weise und nachhaltig die Privatsphäre von Menschen beeinträchtigen oder persönliche Daten Dritten zugänglich machen. Der Negativpreis wurde ins Leben gerufen, um die öffentliche Diskussion um Privatsphäre und Datenschutz zu fördern – er soll missbräuchlichen Umgang mit Technik und Informationen zeigen. Die »Oscars für Überwachung« (Le Monde) werden im Rahmen einer großen Gala in Bielefeld an die (zumeist nicht anwesenden) Preisträger symbolisch übergeben.<\/p>\n
Der Name ist George Orwells negativer Utopie „1984“ entnommen, in der der Autor bereits Ende der vierziger Jahre seine Vision einer totalitären Überwachungsgesellschaft entwarf. Die Preisskulptur, eine von einer Glasscheibe durchtrennte und mit Bleiband gefesselte Figur, wurde von Peter Sommer entworfen. Sie zeigt eine Passage aus Aldous Huxleys „Schöne Neue Welt“.<\/p>\n
Die deutschen BigBrotherAwards werden vom Bielefelder FoeBuD e.V. organisiert. Der FoeBuD gründete sich 1987 als Verein zur Förderung des öffentlichen bewegten und unbewegten Datenverkehrs. Der Jury gehören neben dem FoeBuD sechs weitere Datenschutzorganisationen an, darunter auch die Humanistische Union.<\/p>\n
BigBrotherAwards gibt es in folgenden Ländern:
Australien, Bulgarien, Finnland, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Italien, Neuseeland, Niederlande, Österreich, Schweiz, Spanien, Südkorea, Tschechien, USA.<\/p>\n
