Die Humanistische Union (HU) verleiht ihren diesj\u00e4hrigen Fritz-Bauer-Preis an den L\u00fcbecker Arzt Dr. Klaus Waterstradt. Die Vorsitzende der B\u00fcrgerrechtsorganisation, Prof. Dr. Rosemarie Will, begr\u00fcndete die Entscheidung f\u00fcr den Preistr\u00e4ger: \u201eDas Lebenswerk von Klaus Waterstradt steht in besonderer Weise f\u00fcr den Anspruch auf ein selbstbestimmtes Leben \u2013 von der Geburt bis zum Tod. Er hat sich f\u00fcr das Selbstbestimmungsrecht (ungewollt) schwangerer Frauen ebenso eingesetzt wie f\u00fcr die freie Entscheidung kranker und sterbewilliger Menschen. Klaus Waterstradt steht f\u00fcr eine humane Medizin, die ihre Behandlungsgrenzen anerkennt und ihre Patienten in deren freier Entscheidung behilflich ist, ohne ihnen erniedrigende Zwangsberatungen oder moralische Verpflichtungen aufzub\u00fcrden.“<\/p>\n
F\u00fcr Klaus Waterstradt war die Humanit\u00e4t unserer Rechtsordnung stets mehr als nur eine Frage allgemeiner Prinzipien des Rechts. Sein Engagement ist von der \u00dcberzeugung gepr\u00e4gt, dass sich die Humanit\u00e4t einer Gesellschaft vor allem darin zeige, wie sie mit den existentiellen Problemen der Menschen umgehe \u2013 von der Geburt \u00fcber die Krankheit bis zum Tod. Gemeinsam mit anderen Kollegen gr\u00fcndete er 1974 die erste unabh\u00e4ngige Beratungsstelle f\u00fcr schwangere Frauen in L\u00fcbeck. In der Einrichtung fanden Schwangere eine fachkundige Beratung vor, die keine moralischen Forderungen erhob oder mit strafrechtlichen Sanktionen drohte, sondern ihre Sorgen und Probleme in den Mittelpunkt der Beratung stellte. Klaus Waterstradt war sich durchaus bewusst, dass ein vermeintlicher \u201eLebensschutz\u201c oft das Gegenteil bewirke, f\u00fcr die betroffenen Frauen mit gesundheitlichen Risiken verbunden ist und famili\u00e4re Konflikte versch\u00e4rfen kann.<\/p>\n
Klaus Waterstradt steht dar\u00fcber hinaus f\u00fcr ein politisches und soziales Verst\u00e4ndnis der medizinischen Praxis, das seine Verantwortung auch au\u00dferhalb der Arztpraxis wahrnimmt. Nicht zuletzt setzte sich Klaus Waterstradt f\u00fcr eine humane Medizin ein, die sich ihrer Grenzen bewusst ist. Er initiierte 1978 die Fachtagung \u201eMenschenw\u00fcrdiges Sterben\u201c, mit der es erstmals gelang, die Probleme der menschenw\u00fcrdigen Behandlung im Krankenhaus und den Wunsch nach einem selbstbestimmten Sterben einer breiten \u00d6ffentlichkeit zug\u00e4nglich zu machen. Im Anschluss verfasste er gemeinsam mit anderen den ersten Musterentwurf einer Patientenverf\u00fcgung der Humanistischen Union.
